What is Kriya Yoga?
Kriya Yoga is a universal path to Self-realization and spiritual enlightenment. This integrated tradition unites the most effective elements of all the yoga systems, emphasizing conscious living and superconscious meditation. Through practice, Kriya Yoga removes obstacles, restores wholeness, and reveals our essential nature as spiritual beings. The ultimate goal is to live in harmony with this truth.
The word Kriya (from the Sanskrit root kri, meaning “to do”) signifies “action,” while Yoga means “union”—the alignment of body, mind, and soul.
The Core Practices of Kriya Yoga:
• Superconscious meditation
• Insightful study of scripture and the nature of reality
• Self-discipline for conscious living
• Surrender of the illusion of separation from the Source of Life
How is it learned?
Practitioners are instructed in Kriya philosophy and practices by those trained and authorized to initiate sincere individuals. Initiation involves taking the step to personally commit to practice with sincerity and dedication. Taking on a guru or spiritual mentor, though helpful, is not required.
Defined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Kriya Yoga was brought to the West by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1920. In the traditional way, his direct disciple Roy Eugene Davis, passed the teachings to my guiding teacher Yogacharya Ellen Grace O’Brian. This is the particular lineage of teachers I represent.
Kriya Yoga honors the divine nature of every individual. Its practices dissolve obstacles, revealing innate divinity and the joy of a fully conscious life. As all souls are inherently divine, this path answers the universal yearning for awakening and self-expression.
